About the exhibition

A century after the exchange of population between Greece and Turkey, the painful separation comes to mind again in the photographic exhibition “Treasures from Konya and Sille” at the Mohammed Ali’s Museum from September 4 to October 10, 2024. After its presentation in Konya, Turkey, the exhibition arrives in Kavala, highlighting the various world of the Anatolia.

The Christians left the cities of Cappadocia in an organized manner, moving with them the treasures of their monasteries and houses. The refugee crowds brought with them icons and utensils from the churches of Konya and the Byzantine Monasteries of the Diocese of Nazianzos, firmans and documents, as well as clothes, carpets, jewelry and objects of daily use. The collection was destined to suffer the same fate as its owners, wandering around Greek territory until it found a home at the Center for Cappadocian Studies in Nea Karvali, Kavala. More than 50 objects of unique historical and aesthetic value are photographed for the first time, identified and presented in the exhibition and its publication, curated by Dr. Mete Ilker Mimiroglou, professor of the Necmettin Erbakan University, and Mr. Kaplanis Iosifidis, President of the Center for Cappadocian Studies.

The official opening of the exhibition took place on Wednesday, September 4 at 19:00 at the Square and the Museum of Mohammed Ali, with the presence of representatives of the Municipalities of Kavala and Konya, the Center for Cappadocian Studies and the Necmettin Erbakan University.

The action is implemented with the cooperation of the MOHA Research Center, the Center for Cappadocian Studies of Nea Karvali and the Necmettin Erbakan University of Konya, Turkey.
