Long portrayed in the West, and throughout the Arabic world, as a soldier who emerged from obscurity to become the founder of the modern Egyptian state, Mohammed Ali Paşa was in fact an Ottoman Turk from his birth in the Macedonian port of Kavala (1770-1771) until his death in Alexandria, Egypt (1849). The book is a modest attempt to illustrate this all too often overlooked historical reality.
In addition, the authors present the monuments in Kavala with which Mohammed Ali Paşa linked his name, mainly his Ottoman-style mansion and the Imaret, the educational and charitable foundation as a donation to the city of his birth. The impact of the later ruler of Egypt on the city is visible even today, when the two monuments have acquired new use and life.
